In 1989, He played for the Amsterdam Crusaders in the Netherlands. He played college football at the University of Miami and was drafted in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft.

After retiring from baseball, Vaughan entered the insurance and real estate businesses in Houston. He died from natural causes at the age of 60.
