Linda Perry

April 15, 1965 — Springfield, Massachusetts

Linda Perry is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer who wrote one of the most enduring rock anthems of the 1990s as the frontwoman of 4 Non Blondes and then, after leaving the band, became one of the most commercially successful and musically adventurous behind-the-scenes figures in the music industry — writing and producing hits for artists including Pink, Christina Aguilera, and Gwen Stefani.

What's Going On?

Born on April 15, 1965 in Springfield, Massachusetts, and raised in New Bedford before moving to San Francisco as a young adult, Perry formed 4 Non Blondes in 1989. The band's 1992 album Bigger, Better, Faster, More! contained "What's Up" — a song Perry wrote that cracked the top 15 in the US but became a genuine phenomenon in Europe and has since proven permanently resilient, appearing in commercials, films, and viral moments for three decades. Perry's distinctive voice and guitar work made 4 Non Blondes a cult act, but the group disbanded in 1994 after creative differences.

Songwriter to the Stars

After the band's dissolution, Perry reinvented herself as a songwriter and producer of formidable commercial power. She co-wrote and produced Pink's "Get the Party Started" (2001) and "Just Give Me a Reason" (2012), Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" (2002) and "Hurt" (2006), Gwen Stefani's "What You Waiting For?" (2004), and James Blunt's "Goodbye My Lover" (2005). "Beautiful" was a particularly significant cultural moment — a simple, direct song about self-worth that became an anthem for a generation of young people. Perry has described writing it in a matter of minutes on acoustic guitar.

Did You Know?

When Perry played Christina Aguilera the demo for "Beautiful," Aguilera reportedly cried but initially refused to record it, saying it was too personal and too exposed. Perry insisted. Aguilera eventually recorded it and it became one of the defining songs of her career and one of the most significant pop ballads of the 2000s. Perry regularly cites Aguilera's instinctive resistance followed by commitment as proof that the best songs are frightening before they are obvious.

Industry Figure and Continued Work

Perry founded her own production and publishing company, Custard Records, and has continued producing and writing across a range of artists while becoming increasingly prominent as an industry voice on questions of creative autonomy and artist-producer relationships. She married actress Sara Gilbert in 2014 and they have a son together. She has spoken publicly and extensively about mental health, addiction recovery, and the music industry's mistreatment of artists — a perspective informed by decades of experience on both sides of the recording booth.
