How to Create a Countdown

  1. 1 Name your event (optional). Type something like "My Birthday" or "Wedding Day" so the countdown display shows a label you'll recognize. Leave it blank and it just says "Countdown."
  2. 2 Pick a date and time, or click one of the quick presets — New Year's Day, Next Christmas, This Weekend, or In 30 Days — to fill everything in and start automatically.
  3. 3 Click "Start Countdown." The days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining appear immediately and update live, once per second, for as long as the page stays open.
  4. 4 Change your mind anytime. Adjust the date, time, or event name and click Start Countdown again — the previous countdown stops and the new one takes over instantly.

How Time Zones Work in This Countdown

The Month/Day/Year and Hour/Minute selections you make are interpreted in your device's local time zone — whatever your computer or phone is set to right now. That means the countdown is always accurate for you, no matter where you are in the world. If you share this page with someone in a different time zone, the underlying moment in time they're counting down to is exactly the same instant as yours — but their browser will display it using their own local clock, so a countdown you set for "8:00 PM" might read as "8:00 AM" or some other local hour for them, depending on the time difference. The countdown itself — the actual number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining — stays in sync for everyone, because it's measured from each person's own "now" to that same shared moment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the countdown keep running if I close the tab?

No. The countdown is calculated live in your browser and doesn't persist anywhere — there's no server tracking it and nothing saved to your device. If you close the tab or shut down your browser, the countdown stops. Just come back to this page and start it again; it will pick up exactly where the math says it should.

Can I count down to a time in a different time zone?

The Month/Day/Year and Hour/Minute you select are always treated as your own device's local time. If you know the target moment in another time zone, convert it to your local time first (for example, using a time zone converter), then enter that converted local time here. The countdown itself — the amount of time remaining — will be accurate regardless of which zone the event is "in," since it's really just counting down to one shared instant.

What happens when the countdown hits zero?

While the page is open, the display automatically switches to a celebratory "It's here!" message the moment the countdown reaches zero — you won't see it flash to 0/0/0/0 or roll over into negative numbers.

Can I use this for recurring events, like "days until my next birthday"?

Yes. Just set the target date to the next upcoming occurrence — for example, if today is past this year's birthday, pick next year's date instead. There's no built-in "repeat annually" setting; you simply re-enter the next date each time you want a fresh countdown.

Does this send me a notification or reminder when the countdown ends?

No. Nothing is stored, so there's no mechanism to notify you later — the countdown only updates while this page is open and visible in your browser. If you want a reminder, consider setting a calendar alert in addition to using this tool.

Do I need to create an account or install an app?

No. The countdown timer runs entirely in your web browser. No sign-up, no downloads, no browser extensions — just pick a date and click Start Countdown.

Is my data private?

Yes. Everything happens locally in your browser using JavaScript — your event name, date, and time selections are never sent to a server or stored anywhere. Refreshing or closing the page clears everything.

What if I pick a date and time that's already in the past?

If you click Start Countdown for a moment that has already passed, the tool tells you it's already happened and shows how long ago it was, instead of displaying confusing negative numbers.
