Pharrell Williams

April 5, 1973 — Virginia Beach, Virginia

Pharrell Williams is an American musician, record producer, singer, songwriter, and fashion designer who has shaped the sound of popular music for three decades — first through his production duo The Neptunes, then as a solo artist ("Happy," "Get Lucky") and rapper with N.E.R.D., and now as a global fashion icon serving as Creative Director of Louis Vuitton Men's.

Virginia Beach and The Neptunes

Born Pharrell Lanscilo Williams on April 5, 1973, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, he met future production partner Chad Hugo in a middle school band program, and together they formed The Neptunes production duo while still teenagers. By the early 2000s, it was estimated that Neptunes-produced tracks accounted for 20 percent of all music played on American radio — a staggering dominance produced through a distinctive, sparse sound emphasizing unusual percussion, space, and melodic invention that was immediately recognizable. They produced for Britney Spears, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Nelly, Snoop Dogg, and dozens more, collecting enormous hits across pop, hip-hop, and R&B.

Solo Success and "Happy"

As a solo artist, Pharrell released two studio albums: In My Mind (2006) and Girl (2014). "Happy," written for the animated film Despicable Me 2, became one of the best-selling singles in history, reaching number one in over a dozen countries and earning Pharrell Academy Award and Grammy nominations. He collaborated with Daft Punk on "Get Lucky" (2013), which won four Grammy Awards. His production credits also include Robin Thicke's controversial "Blurred Lines" and Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly. He was a coach on NBC's The Voice, known for his eccentric, instantly memed hat-wearing at the 2014 Grammy Awards.

Did You Know?

When "Happy" from Despicable Me 2 was released in 2013, it came with a unique 24-hour music video at 24hoursofhappy.com — a continuous, looping video that cycled through different people dancing to the song throughout an entire day. It was the first music video ever made in this continuous format. The song spent 47 non-consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and became the best-selling single of 2014 in the United States.

Fashion and Louis Vuitton

Always a fashion presence — founding his own streetwear lines Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream, and collaborating with Adidas and Chanel — Pharrell was appointed Men's Creative Director at Louis Vuitton in 2023, following the death of Virgil Abloh. His first runway show at the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris drew enormous crowds and A-list attendees and announced his arrival in the highest tier of the fashion world. A Grammy Winner, an Oscar nominee, a Billboard chart-topper, and a fashion innovator, Pharrell Williams represents a breadth of cultural creative output that very few artists have achieved.
