By 1937, the United Auto Workers had already won union contracts with General Motors and Chrysler, but Ford Motor Company remained fiercely resistant to unionization. Henry Ford employed a vast private security force known as the Service Department, led by former boxer Harry Bennett. The department included thousands of informants and enforcers tasked with suppressing any union activity at Ford's plants. UAW organizers had been beaten and harassed near Ford facilities before, but the union was determined to reach Ford workers — and chose the pedestrian overpass above the main gates of the River Rouge complex as its distribution point for leaflets.

The Battle
On the morning of May 26, 1937, UAW organizers — including Walter Reuther and Richard Frankensteen — gathered on the Miller Road overpass above the River Rouge plant to hand out union leaflets. Ford's Service Department enforcers surrounded and outnumbered them, then carried out a systematic beating. Men were punched, kicked, and thrown down the overpass stairs. Women distributing leaflets on the street below were also attacked. The Detroit Free Press and Detroit News ran photographs of the bloodied organizers the next day, and national outrage was immediate. Henry Ford dismissed the attack as the organizers' own fault, but the images told a different story.
Aftermath & Legacy
The National Labor Relations Board charged Ford with violating the National Labor Relations Act, and the brutal imagery convinced millions that auto workers deserved union protections. After the United States entered World War II and production demands soared, Henry Ford — under pressure from his wife Clara — finally agreed to unionization. On June 20, 1941, the UAW-Ford contract was signed, giving workers the union shop they had sought for years. Walter Reuther went on to lead the UAW for decades, making it one of the most powerful and progressive unions in American history.
