Hallidie's cable-grip system was patented and quickly licensed and adapted by cities around the world facing similar hillside transit challenges, including Chicago, Seattle, Melbourne, and London. By the 1890s, dozens of cable car lines crisscrossed American cities, though most were eventually replaced by electric streetcars, which proved cheaper to operate and maintain. San Francisco, however, retained a portion of its cable car network, and today the city's cable cars remain the last manually operated system of their kind in the world, now recognized as a National Historic Landmark. The three surviving lines, Powell-Mason, Powell-Hyde, and California Street, still use gripman-operated cars pulling cables through underground channels, essentially the same mechanical principle Hallidie demonstrated in 1873.
