Launch and the First Docking

Gemini 8 lifted off atop a Titan II rocket from Launch Complex 19 at 11:41 a.m. EST on March 16, 1966, roughly 101 minutes after an unmanned Agena Target Vehicle had launched from nearby Complex 14. Commander Neil Armstrong, making his first spaceflight, and pilot David Scott chased down the Agena over several orbits, using onboard radar and careful maneuvering to close the gap. At 6 hours and 33 minutes into the mission, Armstrong guided the Gemini capsule's nose into the Agena's docking collar, achieving the first successful docking of two spacecraft in orbital history. The achievement was a critical proof of concept for NASA's Apollo program, which would require lunar module and command module dockings to get astronauts to the Moon and back. A Dangerous Spin

Armstrong tried to correct the motion using the Gemini's Orbit Attitude and Maneuvering System, but the rotation only worsened, eventually reaching a rate of about one revolution per second. Believing the problem lay with the Agena, the crew undocked from it, but the tumbling grew more violent, confirming the fault was in their own capsule. A thruster on the Gemini spacecraft had become stuck in the open position, firing continuously and spinning the astronauts at a rate that risked structural failure or unconsciousness. With vision blurring under the strain, Armstrong made the critical decision to activate the Reentry Control System, a separate set of thrusters normally reserved for atmospheric reentry, to override the malfunctioning system and stabilize the craft. Emergency Splashdown and Legacy

Instead of the planned three-day mission, which included a spacewalk by Scott, Gemini 8 was forced to reenter after less than 11 hours in space. The capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near Okinawa, Japan, at 10:22 p.m. EST, roughly 10 hours and 41 minutes after launch, far from the primary recovery zone in the Atlantic. Scott's planned extravehicular activity never took place, and the crew endured a tense three-hour wait, bobbing in rough seas, before the destroyer USS Leonard F. Mason arrived to retrieve them. Post-flight investigation traced the malfunction to a short circuit in one of the Gemini's electrical thrusters, which caused it to fire uncommanded. NASA revised its procedures and checklists in response, improving crew training for similar emergencies. Despite the harrowing abort, Gemini 8 proved that astronauts could dock spacecraft in orbit and, just as importantly, that a well-trained crew could recognize, diagnose, and survive a rapidly escalating mechanical failure.
