A Scientist Turns to a New Art
By 1839, John Herschel was already one of Britain's most accomplished scientific minds, having distinguished himself in astronomy, chemistry, and mathematics while continuing the celestial survey work begun by his father, Sir William Herschel. When news broke that summer of Louis Daguerre's daguerreotype process in France and William Henry Fox Talbot's calotype experiments in England, Herschel moved with remarkable speed. Drawing on his deep knowledge of chemistry, particularly his earlier discovery that sodium thiosulfate ("hypo") could dissolve unexposed silver salts, he began devising his own photographic methods within days of hearing the announcements. His chemical insight would soon prove indispensable to photographers everywhere, since hypo became the standard fixing agent that stabilized images and prevented them from darkening into blackness over time.

Capturing an Image on Glass

This apparatus, once the largest telescope in the world, made a fitting subject for a new instrument of scientific observation. Unlike Daguerre's polished silver-coated copper plates or Talbot's paper negatives, Herschel's use of glass offered a smoother, more transparent surface capable of rendering finer detail without the fibrous texture of paper. Though his glass plate process was not immediately practical for widespread use, it anticipated the wet collodion technique that Frederick Scott Archer would perfect in 1851, which became the dominant photographic method for the following three decades. Lasting Contributions to Photography
Herschel's rapid burst of experimentation in 1839 produced far more than a single glass plate image. He is credited with coining the very term "photography," from the Greek words for "light" and "writing," and with introducing the now-universal terms "negative" and "positive" to describe photographic images. In 1842, building on his chemical expertise, he invented the cyanotype process, commonly known as the blueprint, which produced vivid Prussian blue images and found lasting use in architecture and engineering for reproducing technical drawings well into the twentieth century. Herschel also applied his photographic techniques to botanical documentation, using light-sensitive processes to record plant specimens. His willingness to freely share his discoveries, rather than patent them for profit, accelerated the spread of photographic knowledge across Europe and beyond, cementing his reputation as one of photography's essential founding figures even though he never abandoned his primary identity as an astronomer and natural philosopher.
