Alec Baldwin
April 3, 1958 — Amityville, New York
Alec Baldwin is an American actor whose volatile talent and outsized persona have made him one of the most recognized figures in entertainment for four decades — celebrated as a screen villain, a sitcom icon, and a supremely confident comic performer, while his personal life has repeatedly drawn as much attention as his work.
Ambition and Early Career
Born Alexander Rae Baldwin III on April 3, 1958, in Amityville, New York, he is the oldest of four brothers who all became actors — William, Daniel, and Stephen Baldwin followed him into the profession, making the Baldwins a genuine Hollywood dynasty. Alec studied drama at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He broke out in a recurring role on the daytime soap The Doctors, then on stage as Marc Anthony in Julius Caesar. Film roles in Beetlejuice (1988), Working Girl (1988), and Talk Radio (1988) established him as a formidable screen presence.
From Silver Screen Villain to Television Legend
His role as CIA analyst Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October (1990) made Baldwin an A-list star. Through the 1990s he delivered acclaimed performances in Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) — his scene-stealing turn as Blake, the ruthless sales motivator in the "always be closing" speech, became one of the most quoted moments in modern cinema — and The Cooler (2003), which earned him a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination. But it was 30 Rock (2006–2013), in which he played network executive Jack Donaghy, that revealed his true genius for comedy. He won three consecutive Golden Globes and three Emmy Awards for the role.
Did You Know?
Alec Baldwin's portrayal of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, which he began in 2016, became one of the most celebrated and controversial political impressions in the show's history — earning him an Emmy Award while also drawing constant public commentary. Baldwin himself had mixed feelings about the role, describing it as both rewarding and exhausting. He hosted SNL 17 times, more than any other guest host in the show's history.
Controversies and Later Career
Baldwin's life and career have been accompanied by well-publicized controversies — from a viral voicemail to his daughter Ireland to legal battles following the tragic on-set shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during the filming of Rust in 2021. Involuntary manslaughter charges against him were dismissed in 2024. Throughout, his talent has remained undeniable, and he continues to work prolifically in film and television while co-hosting a podcast with his wife Hilaria and raising their large family.
