By identifying Cepheid variable stars within the Andromeda Nebula and applying the known relationship between a Cepheid's luminosity and pulsation period, Hubble calculated its distance and proved it lay far outside our own galaxy. This 1923–1924 discovery instantly expanded the known scale of the universe. Hubble then went further, measuring the velocities of distant galaxies and comparing them to their distances. In 1929, he formulated what became known as Hubble's Law: galaxies are moving away from us at speeds proportional to their distance, indicating that the universe is expanding. This finding provided crucial observational support for the Big Bang theory and transformed cosmology into a rigorous, evidence-based science.
