Etika
May 21, 1990 — June 19, 2019 — Brooklyn, New York
Desmond Daniel Amofah, known online as Etika, was a Haitian-American YouTube content creator and gaming personality who became known for his exuberant, high-energy reaction videos to gaming announcements and Nintendo Directs. He built a devoted audience with his authentic enthusiasm and humor, but also struggled publicly with mental health challenges in the final years of his life. His death at 29 prompted widespread conversations about mental health awareness in online communities and sparked the creation of advocacy initiatives in his name.
YouTube Career
Born on May 21, 1990, in Brooklyn, New York, to Haitian immigrant parents, Amofah launched his YouTube channel "EWNetwork" (later "Etika" and associated channels) and built a following with his energetic, unfiltered commentary on gaming news, particularly Nintendo announcements. His reaction videos to Nintendo Directs became some of his most viral content — his genuine excitement and comedic expressiveness resonated with gaming audiences and made him a beloved figure in that corner of YouTube. He also branched into commentary on internet culture more broadly. At his peak he had hundreds of thousands of subscribers and a devoted community of fans.
Mental Health Struggles
In his final years, Etika's public behavior became increasingly erratic and his content reflected mental health struggles that played out in real-time before his audience. He experienced several public crises, had his channels removed by YouTube for policy violations during these episodes, and was hospitalized on multiple occasions. His fans, the online gaming community, and mental health advocates watched with growing concern as the situation escalated. In June 2019 he disappeared after posting a video that many interpreted as a farewell. His remains were recovered from the East River in New York City on June 19, 2019. He was 29 years old. His death was ruled a suicide.
