Jeff Waters
February 13, 1966 — Ontario, Canada
Jeff Waters is a Canadian guitarist, songwriter and producer best known as the founder and driving creative force behind the thrash metal band Annihilator. For nearly four decades he has shaped the band's sound as its principal songwriter and lead guitarist, often playing multiple instruments on its recordings himself. Waters has also built a career as a producer and studio owner, working from his own Watersound Studios.
Early Life
Jeff Waters was born on February 13, 1966, in Ontario, Canada. Drawn to the guitar from a young age, he immersed himself in the rock and heavy metal records of the late 1970s and early 1980s, an era when bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and the emerging thrash metal scene were reshaping hard rock. Waters developed technical proficiency on guitar early on, teaching himself intricate riffing and lead work that would later become a signature of his playing style. Growing up in Ontario, he was part of a small but ambitious Canadian metal scene that produced several influential acts during the decade. By his late teens, Waters was already writing original material and searching for the right outlet to channel his fast, aggressive, and melodically complex songwriting. That search led him, in the mid-1980s, to begin assembling what would become his life's defining project.
Career and Annihilator
In 1984, Jeff Waters founded Annihilator in Ottawa, Ontario, establishing himself as the band's guitarist, primary songwriter, and de facto leader. The band broke through internationally with its 1989 debut album, Alice in Hell, which showcased Waters' rapid-fire riffing and technical songwriting and became a landmark release in the thrash metal genre. Unlike many bandleaders, Waters frequently played guitar, bass, and sometimes drums on Annihilator's studio recordings himself, maintaining creative control while cycling through numerous vocalists and touring musicians over the decades. He continued releasing albums through the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s, adapting the band's sound while retaining its technical, riff-driven core. Alongside his work with Annihilator, Waters built a parallel career as a record producer, engineering and mixing albums for himself and other metal acts. His reputation as both a virtuoso guitarist and a hands-on producer cemented his standing as one of Canadian metal's most enduring figures.
Did You Know?
On many Annihilator albums, Jeff Waters didn't just write the songs and play guitar — he also recorded the bass parts and, on several releases, even the drum tracks himself, essentially performing as a one-man band in the studio.
Studio Work and Legacy
Since 1994, Jeff Waters has owned and operated Watersound Studios, a recording facility that served as the production home for Annihilator's albums and other projects. The studio operated in Ottawa, Ontario, from 2003 until 2018, after which Waters relocated the operation to the United Kingdom, where he now resides. This move reflected both his evolving personal life and his continued commitment to producing high-quality metal records outside the traditional major-label studio system. Waters' influence extends beyond his own discography; his guitar technique and production choices have influenced a generation of thrash and technical metal musicians worldwide. Annihilator's catalog, built almost entirely around his songwriting and playing, remains a touchstone of the genre, admired for its blend of speed, precision, and melody. As Waters continues to write, record, and tour into his sixth decade of life, he stands as a rare example of a musician who has sustained a single creative vision across multiple decades, lineups, and continents.
