John Cena
Born April 23, 1977
John Cena is an American professional wrestler, actor, and television presenter who became one of the most decorated and recognizable stars in WWE history before parlaying his fame into a successful Hollywood career with roles in action blockbusters. He has been recognized as the leading Make-A-Wish Foundation wish-granter in the organization's history.
From West Newbury to the WWE
Born John Felix Anthony Cena on April 23, 1977, in West Newbury, Massachusetts, he grew up the second of five brothers in a Catholic family. He was a self-described shy kid who began weight training in high school to build confidence, developing the physique that would define his career. He played center on the football team at Springfield College in Illinois, where he also majored in exercise physiology. After graduating in 1999 he moved to California to pursue bodybuilding and acting, working as a limousine driver while auditioning.
In 2001 Cena was hired by WWE and sent to its developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling. He debuted on the main WWE circuit in 2002 and initially struggled to find his character. A freestyle rap battle segment on SmackDown! in late 2002 ignited a connection with live audiences, and his "Doctor of Thuganomics" hip-hop persona took off. Within two years he had become one of the company's top fan favorites, and in April 2005 he captured his first WWE Championship.
Championship Reigns and Cultural Impact
Over the following fifteen years, Cena accumulated a record-equaling 16 world title reigns in WWE, matching Ric Flair's legendary career total. He headlined WrestleMania multiple times, feuded with every significant name on the roster, and became the face of WWE's PG-era rebranding in the late 2000s. His motto "Hustle, Loyalty, Respect" and his "You Can't See Me" hand gesture became globally recognized cultural shorthand — and, improbably, internet memes.
Cena's philanthropy attracted as much attention as his ring work. He has granted more than 650 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation — more than any individual in the organization's history — and regularly visits sick children in hospitals. He emerged as one of the most beloved figures in sports entertainment not merely for his athletic excellence but for a genuine kindness that audiences recognized as authentic.
Did You Know?
John Cena is a fluent Mandarin speaker. He learned Mandarin Chinese specifically to communicate with WWE's growing Chinese fanbase, and hosts WWE programming in Mandarin. He impressed Chinese audiences by delivering a speech entirely in Mandarin during the promotion of Fast & Furious 9.
Hollywood Career
Cena's transition to acting proved far more successful than most athlete-to-actor crossovers. He appeared in action films including The Marine (2006), Trainwreck (2015), and the Fast & Furious franchise. His comedic timing — a revelation to audiences who knew him only from wrestling — earned particular praise in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021) and the spin-off series Peacemaker, for which he received Golden Globe and Critics' Choice nominations. He also appeared in the children's film Ferdinand as a voice actor. With a combination of charisma, physical ability, and a willingness to play against type, Cena has built a film career that stands entirely on its own merits.
