Soichi Noguchi is a Japanese aeronautical engineer and former JAXA astronaut whose career spans three different types of spacecraft. He became the sixth Japanese astronaut to fly in space and the first person from Japan to launch aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon, cementing his place as one of his country's most versatile space explorers.

Early Life and Education

Soichi Noguchi was born on April 15, 1965, in Yokohama, Japan. From an early age he displayed a strong interest in aviation and engineering, which led him to pursue a degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Tokyo. He completed his bachelor's degree in 1989 and went on to earn a master's degree in the same field from the university in 1991. After finishing his studies, Noguchi joined Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI Corporation), where he worked as an aircraft structural engineer, gaining hands-on experience designing and analyzing aerospace components. This technical background provided the foundation for his later career as an astronaut, giving him deep familiarity with the engineering challenges involved in spaceflight. Spaceflight Career

Noguchi's first spaceflight came on July 26, 2005, when he served as a mission specialist aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-114, NASA's first 'return to flight' mission following the Columbia disaster. During this high-profile flight, he performed spacewalks to test repair techniques for the shuttle's thermal protection system, helping restore confidence in the shuttle program. Noguchi later became the fifth Japanese astronaut to fly on the Space Shuttle. His second mission launched in December 2009, when he flew to the International Space Station aboard Soyuz TMA-17 as part of Expedition 22, later transitioning into Expedition 23. He lived and worked aboard the ISS for over five months, conducting scientific research and station maintenance before returning to Earth on June 2, 2010. A decade later, in November 2020, Noguchi made history again by launching aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon Resilience as part of the Crew-1 mission, becoming the first Japanese astronaut to fly on a commercial crew capsule. He remained aboard the ISS for Expedition 64/65, returning to Earth in May 2021.
