The settlement, brokered with India's Supreme Court, effectively closed most civil claims against the company, though many survivors received only a few hundred dollars each after years of bureaucratic delay. Criminal proceedings against Union Carbide and its officials moved slowly through Indian courts for decades. Warren Anderson, the company's CEO at the time of the disaster, was declared a fugitive from justice by an Indian court after failing to appear for criminal proceedings, and he died in the United States in 2014 without ever facing trial in India. In June 2010, seven former employees of Union Carbide India Limited were convicted of causing death by negligence and sentenced to two years in prison, a verdict that many victims and activists condemned as insufficient.
