On October 22, 2008, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched Chandrayaan-1, India's first uncrewed mission to the Moon, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The mission made India only the fourth nation to reach the Moon with its own technology, marking a major milestone in the country's space program. Chandrayaan-1 would go on to make significant scientific discoveries, including strong evidence of water molecules on the lunar surface.
A Long History of Lunar Fascination
Humanity's exploration of the Moon stretches back centuries before any spacecraft left Earth. Long before physical exploration began, observers relied on the naked eye and, eventually, the telescope to study Earth's only natural satellite. Galileo Galilei, generally credited as the first person to use a telescope for astronomical purposes, built his own instrument in 1609 and turned it skyward. Among his earliest and most striking observations were the mountains and craters scattered across the lunar surface, findings that shattered the ancient belief that celestial bodies were perfect, smooth spheres. It would take another 350 years before humans could move beyond observation and actually touch the Moon. That leap occurred on September 14, 1959, when the Soviet Union's Luna 2 probe made a deliberate impact on the lunar surface, becoming the first human-made object to reach another celestial body. This achievement kicked off the Space Race era of lunar exploration, with both the Soviet Union and the United States racing to send probes, and eventually astronauts, to the Moon throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Chandrayaan-1's Launch and Mission
Chandrayaan-1 lifted off aboard a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C11) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India, on October 22, 2008. The spacecraft weighed approximately 1,380 kilograms at launch and carried eleven scientific instruments, five built in India and six contributed by international partners including NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Bulgarian Aerospace Agency. After a journey of roughly five days, Chandrayaan-1 entered lunar orbit on November 8, 2008, and was subsequently placed into a 100-kilometer polar orbit around the Moon to conduct its survey. One of the mission's most dramatic moments came on November 14, 2008, when the Moon Impact Probe separated from the orbiter and deliberately crashed into the lunar surface near the south pole, deploying the Indian tricolor flag on the Moon and collecting valuable data during its descent. The mission's primary goals included creating a detailed three-dimensional atlas of the lunar surface and conducting chemical and mineralogical mapping across the entire Moon, with particular attention to the previously underexplored polar regions.
Scientific Legacy and Discoveries
Chandrayaan-1's most celebrated discovery came in September 2009, when data from its Moon Mineralogy Mapper instrument, developed in collaboration with NASA, provided compelling evidence of water molecules and hydroxyl groups distributed across the lunar surface. This finding fundamentally changed scientists' understanding of the Moon, which had long been considered a bone-dry world, and opened new possibilities for future lunar exploration, including the potential use of lunar water as a resource for future human missions. Although the mission was originally planned to last two years, ground controllers lost contact with Chandrayaan-1 on August 29, 2009, roughly ten months into its operation, likely due to a failure in its power system. Despite this premature end, the mission was widely regarded as a success, having achieved nearly 95 percent of its scientific objectives. Chandrayaan-1 firmly established India as a serious player in space exploration and paved the way for subsequent missions, including Chandrayaan-2 in 2019 and the historic Chandrayaan-3, which achieved a soft landing near the lunar south pole in August 2023, making India the first country to do so.
