The problem originated in the forward cargo hold, where 144 chemical oxygen generators—devices used to supply emergency oxygen to passengers—had been improperly packed by a maintenance contractor, SabreTech, without the required safety caps. Without these caps, the generators could activate accidentally, producing intense heat exceeding 500 degrees Fahrenheit. One or more generators ignited combustible materials packed alongside them, including tires and cardboard boxes, sparking a fire that spread rapidly through the cargo compartment.
