Fiona Onasanya
August 23, 1983 — England
Fiona Onasanya is a former British politician and solicitor who briefly served as the Labour Member of Parliament for Peterborough. Elected in the 2017 general election, she became the first MP in modern British history to be removed from office through a recall petition, following her conviction for perverting the course of justice.
Early Life and Legal Career
Fiona Oluyinka Onasanya was born on August 23, 1983, in England, to Nigerian parents. She pursued a career in law before entering politics, training and working as a solicitor. Her professional background in the legal field gave her particular credibility on justice-related issues once she moved into public life. Onasanya became active within the Labour Party, building local connections in Peterborough, a city in Cambridgeshire with a competitive political history between Labour and the Conservatives. Her legal expertise and community involvement positioned her as a candidate for Parliament, and she was selected to stand for the Peterborough constituency ahead of the 2017 snap general election called by then-Prime Minister Theresa May. Her background as a solicitor made the later events of her political career, involving a criminal conviction for a justice-related offence, particularly notable and widely discussed in the media.
Election to Parliament
In the 2017 United Kingdom general election, Fiona Onasanya won the Peterborough seat for the Labour Party, unseating the sitting Conservative MP in a closely watched contest. Her victory was part of a broader national trend that saw Labour, under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership, make unexpected gains despite the Conservatives retaining power. As the newly elected MP for Peterborough, Onasanya took her seat in the House of Commons and began representing constituents on local and national issues. Her tenure, however, was soon overshadowed by a legal case unrelated to her parliamentary duties but stemming from a driving offence. In December 2018, she was convicted of perverting the course of justice after lying about who was driving her car when it was caught speeding. The conviction led to significant political fallout, including her suspension from the Labour Party and mounting pressure from constituents and fellow politicians for her to resign her seat.
Did You Know?
Fiona Onasanya holds the distinction of being the first Member of Parliament in British history to be removed from office through a successful recall petition, after more than 19,000 of her Peterborough constituents signed to force her out following her 2018 conviction for perverting the course of justice.
Recall and Removal from Office
Following her conviction, Fiona Onasanya was sentenced to three months in prison, though she initially resisted calls to step down as MP. Under the Recall of MPs Act 2015, her conviction triggered a recall petition in her Peterborough constituency, giving voters the opportunity to force a by-election if enough signatures were gathered. In May 2019, more than 19,000 constituents signed the petition, surpassing the required threshold, and Onasanya was formally removed from Parliament—making her the first MP ever unseated through this recall mechanism. The subsequent Peterborough by-election was won by Labour's Lisa Forbes, keeping the seat within the party despite the scandal. Onasanya's case became a landmark moment in British political accountability, illustrating the practical power of recall legislation designed to hold elected officials responsible for serious misconduct. Her downfall also prompted wider discussion about standards in public life and the consequences facing politicians convicted of crimes while serving. She was subsequently struck off as a solicitor, ending her legal career alongside her political one.
