During the Second World War, Needham traveled to China as head of the British Scientific Mission, visiting universities and research institutions across the country and forging lasting relationships with Chinese scholars. These experiences convinced him that Chinese civilization had achieved remarkable scientific and technological breakthroughs, from papermaking and gunpowder to advanced astronomy and engineering, long before comparable developments in Europe, yet this history remained largely unknown to Western audiences. Returning to Cambridge, Needham abandoned laboratory biochemistry to dedicate himself to documenting this hidden history. In 1954, he began publishing Science and Civilisation in China, an ambitious multivolume project intended to catalogue and analyze centuries of Chinese scientific achievement across fields including mathematics, physics, chemistry, and medicine. The project grew far larger than initially planned, eventually spanning dozens of volumes and requiring an international team of collaborators.
