Tim Finn
June 25, 1952 — Te Awamutu, New Zealand
Tim Finn is a New Zealand singer, songwriter, and musician who has been one of the most influential figures in Australasian rock music for over five decades. Best known as the founding vocalist of Split Enz and a co-member of Crowded House alongside his younger brother Neil Finn, he has also maintained a substantial solo career, blending melodic pop sensibility with literate, emotionally resonant lyrics.
Early Life and Split Enz
Born on June 25, 1952, in Te Awamutu, New Zealand, Tim Finn formed Split Enz in Auckland in 1972. The band began as a theatrical art rock group with elaborate stage costumes and an eclectic sound that drew on glam rock, progressive influences, and New Zealand folk traditions. Finn's songwriting drove the band's creative identity, and after years of cult following in Australia and Britain, Split Enz broke through commercially in 1980 with the album True Colours. The single "I Got You," written by Tim, became a major international hit and remains one of the most beloved songs in Australasian pop history. The band dissolved in 1984, by which point Neil had also joined and was developing his own formidable songwriting voice.
Crowded House and Solo Work
After Split Enz, Tim launched a solo career and released several acclaimed albums through the 1980s and 1990s. In 1991 he joined his brother's band Crowded House, contributing to the album Woodface — which included the international hit "Fall at Your Feet" and the Australian chart-topper "It's Only Natural." Tim's harmonies and songwriting presence on that record are considered among the highlights of Crowded House's catalogue. He and Neil have also collaborated under the name The Finn Brothers, releasing albums that showcased their remarkable vocal chemistry. Tim has continued to record and tour as a solo artist, earning a reputation as one of the finest melodic songwriters of his generation.

Tim and Neil Finn have both been made Officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit for their contributions to music — a rare sibling honor that reflects the extraordinary cultural impact the Finn family has had on New Zealand's artistic identity.
Legacy
Tim Finn's contributions to New Zealand and Australian music are incalculable. Split Enz under his leadership was among the first bands from the region to achieve genuine international recognition, opening doors for generations of Antipodean artists who followed. His gift for melodic songwriting and his distinctive, emotionally direct voice have made his best work enduring. The Finn brothers together represent one of popular music's most celebrated fraternal partnerships, and Tim's place in that story — as the elder pioneer who created the template — remains secure.
