José Delfín Fernández Gómez was born on July 31, 1992, in Santa Clara, Cuba. Growing up under a Communist government that restricted travel, he made multiple failed attempts to defect before finally succeeding as a teenager. He and his mother crossed the Gulf of Mexico by boat in 2007, a harrowing journey during which he reportedly jumped into the water to rescue someone who had fallen overboard, only to discover it was his own mother. The family settled in Tampa, Florida, where Fernández quickly established himself as a dominant high school pitcher. His talent and velocity attracted major league scouts, and the Miami Marlins selected him in the first round of the 2011 MLB draft, just a few years after he arrived in the United States with barely any knowledge of English or organized American baseball.
A Rising Star in Miami
Fernández made his MLB debut with the Marlins in April 2013 at just 20 years old, skipping Triple-A entirely. He immediately dazzled hitters with a mid-90s fastball, a devastating curveball, and poise well beyond his years, going 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA to win the National League Rookie of the Year award and make his first All-Star team. Tommy John surgery cost him most of the 2014 and part of the 2015 seasons, but he returned dominant, striking out batters at one of the highest rates in baseball history. In 2016, he was arguably the best pitcher in the National League, posting a 16-8 record with a 2.86 ERA and 253 strikeouts, earning his second All-Star selection. His death occurred just weeks before he would have started for the Marlins in what could have been a playoff push, and it devastated the baseball community; the Marlins postponed their next game, and teammates wore his No. 16 jersey in tribute during an emotional return to the field. Fernández left behind a legacy as one of the most gifted and joyful pitchers of his generation, and a daughter born after his death. The Marlins later retired his number, and he is remembered not only for his statistical dominance but for embodying the American dream—a Cuban refugee who risked his life for freedom and became a beloved star in his adopted country.
